When Jean Shaw started working seven years ago at The Hangout, Bertha-Hewitt’s School Age Childcare Program through Freshwater, she wasn’t sure what she was in for. “I really love it. I enjoy interacting with the children. It is very interesting seeing boys and girls who are now juniors and seniors who still ask if they can come to The Hangout,” said Jean.

Three mayors were elected by write-in votes in Clarissa, Bertha and Eagle Bend. Bertha’s present mayor, Don Booen, did not file for re-election. Robert (Bob) Larson had announced that he would accept the position if Bertha’s voters would write in his name. Larson came in second with write-in candidate Gary Kleen received the most write-ins.

November 16, 1950
“No home is safe while there is a single case of tuberculosis in the community,” Mayor George Quanbeck said, issuing a formal proclamation in support of the 1950 Christmas Seal sale.

Bertha’s second annual Community Chest drive is in full swing. The following organizations are included: Sister Kenny Fund; Girl Scouts; Boy Scouts; Salvation Army; Heart Fund: U.S.O.; Minnesota State Organization of the Blind; America Social Hygiene Association; and Children’s Home Society. The Red Cross, Cancer Fund and March of Dimes were dropped at their request to make private drives.
