In honor of Veterans Day, November 11, 2000, the Echo Press and Doolittle’s Air Cafe invited readers to write a brief essay about a World War II Veteran/Hero. Charles “Chuck” DeVorak, Bertha, was nominated by his daughter, Wendy L. Kohler of Alexandria. From the submissions, readers were asked to vote for three of the veterans to be featured on the “Wall of Honor” at the Alexandria Doolittle’s that will open in February. “This will be a permanent memorial to these men and a vivid reminder of the gratitude we possess for those who served our country,” said Barb Olson, Doolittle’s spokesperson. Chuck DeVorak served as chief radioman aboard a United States Navy battleship in World War II.

Her business was located next to Arc Electric in a small shop called “Lou’s Hairstyling”. Her last day in business was December 30. The community will miss her.
