Mrs. Guy Messenger of rural Bertha was the victim of a fire which destroyed her farm on New Year’s Day. Her death, according to local Fire Chief Leonard Cossentine, was due to smoke inhalation or suffocation. Both the Eagle Bend and Bertha Fire Departments pumped vast amounts of water onto the flaming building, but were unable to control the blaze. The house with attached garage was reduced to a smoldering pile of ashes.

A shortage of water pressure due to a broken water main in the village water system, resulted in there being no school on Wednesday of this week. Although water was being pumped from both village wells and from the auxiliary system of the creamery, the break was of such a nature so as to lose more water than the three systems could supply.
