Verndale’s legendary Barber Bob will be greatly missed

by Trinity Gruenberg

The Verndale community was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of the town barber, Bob Horn.

Known for his $5 haircuts, $5 Bob has been a staple is the community for a very long time known for his humor, love of cars and horses and always wearing his white coat.

Robert “Bob” Horn was born in Bertha on January 22, 1939, and graduated from the Verndale High School in 1958. After school, he worked at the G&L gas station and Verndale Feed which was owned by his father, Clifford.

In 1959, Bob decided to become a barber and attended school in St. Paul.

He met his wife Norma in high school, but they didn’t start dating until after Norma graduated from Verndale.

“I had no idea until we were dating and one day he said he was going to barber school. I was as shocked as his mother and everyone else I think. I don’t know why he chose that,” said Norma.

They were married on July 16, 1960. They had two daughters, Junelle (Jackson) and Rochelle (Mahlen), and a son, Scott.

The family moved to Rosemount where he managed the Southdale Shopping Center Barber Shop for a couple of years.

In August of 1968, the family moved to Wadena where he opened Bob’s Barber Shop. A year later he purchased a small dairy farm. Bob sold his Wadena shop in 1980.

He had stopped working as a barber for a few years until the death of Verndale’s Barber Wayne Kopp in 1985. Bob was asked by Kopp’s family to manage Kopp’s Barber Shop for a few days until they could find someone to take over. Well, Bob just never left. . .
