Bertha-Hewitt 49, Verndale 30 The Bertha-Hewitt girls basketball team turned in a strong defensive performance on January 13, defeating VHS 49–30 with balanced scoring and relentless pressure on the defensive end. Kendal Beyatt led the Bears with a game-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds to record a double-double. by Coach Sam Schmitz Verndale 30, Bertha-Hewitt 49 The Verndale Pirates dropped a Park Region Conference game to the Bertha-Hewitt Bears 30-49 on January 13. The Pirates were hassled on perimeter defense and went through stretches of costly turnovers as the Bears had 28 steals. The Pirates had a higher free-throw percentage and three-point percentage than the Bears, but the Bears were able to score more points in the paint. Girls Basketball had three games last week, starting on Tuesday against Browerville. The Tigers started out the game two girls short due to injuries and an early injury to M. Riedel, and the Tigers would find themselves with a trove of different line-ups throughout the night. Girls’ Basketball lost a pair of games last week to tough opponents in Menahga and Wadena. On Tuesday, they hosted Menahga and found themselves down early by 20 to start the game. Still, the Bears played strong late in the first half and early in the 2nd half, keeping it a 20-point game for most of the way before Menahga pulled away even more at the end to make it a 40-77 loss for the Bears... Elfstrum hit three second-half three-pointers to keep the game within reach, but the Pirates were unable to get key defensive stops.
