Recollections



On May 18, at approximately midnight, Lew Arthur Schlief, 36, of rural Eagle Bend was arrested without incident in Breckenridge by Todd County deputies, K-9 Officer Terry Bandemer, K-9 Officer Don Burns and Undersheriff Roger Gates with assistance of the Breckenridge Police Department and Wilkin County Sheriff’s Department. Schlief was arrested at a private residence. Todd County authorities had been investigating and set up surveillance for approximately 48 hours prior to his arrest. A warrant for Schlief was issued by Todd County District Court on February 13 for failure to appear for sentencing after being found guilty by a jury on two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

Eugene Maland of rural Eagle Bend was driving his vehicle southbound when it left County Road 3 and rolled over coming to rest on its top on Thursday, May 18. Maland was taken to the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena by Browerville Ambulance. The Eagle Bend Fire Department Rescue Squad assisted at the scene.


50 Years Ago

May 21, 1970

Two new members were named to the Board of Education of Independent School District 790 on Tuesday evening. The spirited election saw a total of 305 voters casting ballots for their choices from a field of five candidates. Elected were Edward Clark and Earl Mittag, both announced as anti-consolidation candidates.

Among the numerous awards presented to students of the local school at the awards programs last week was the Percy Fearing German Camp Award. Recipients were Ralph Notch, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Notch, Sr.; and Pamela Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Anderson.
