News from Bertha and Hewitt's Past

They stopped their wagons, climbed down onto the fertile soil of what would eventually be northern Todd County and decided to make it their home. Their name was Hewitt. Originally from Pennsylvania, the family had spent the past two years in southern Minnesota near Springfield. They moved north after hearing the farming was good and homestead sites were available. Now, nearly 125 years later, the descendants of the Hewitt family—father Henry, mother Martha, sons Fred and William and daughter Annie—will be returning. A group of about 40 descendants are planing to attend the Bertha-Hewitt all school reunion events with a reception for the Hewitt family scheduled for July 8 at 3 p.m.

The Bertha-Hewitt marching band earned first place honors in two parades last weekend. On Saturday the band took top honors in Class A at the Wadena June Jubilee celebration. On Sunday the band marched in the huge Alexandria Vikingland Band Festival. Not only did they win their division, awards also went to the band in winds, percussion and color guard. Of the 25 bands, they were sixth overall for all schools, all sizes.

Several from the community attended the farewell party for Rev. Lammers, pastor of the Hewitt Nazarene Church, at the community hall in Hewitt on Friday night. Sunday, he preached his last sermon before leaving for his new work as the Young People’s Recreational Director at Doctor Bresee Nazarene Church in Pasadena, California.

Armand Sagehorn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sagehorn, arrived home last week for a thirty day furlough, following his release from a German prison camp which he had been at since last December 12.
