Mason's Monolog

I have a few grievances with job searching. I’m using my own experience from years prior and my current job search situation.

I don’t plan on leaving my job here at the news office, at least not for a while, but I do need a second job. I don’t have a problem working two jobs to put a little more money in my pocket.

My biggest grievance with the job searching process is, being as young as I am, some of the businesses where I apply are hesitant to hire. I’m a hard worker and I buckle down and get my stuff done, but it’s hard to prove yourself if an employer won’t hire you and give you a chance. You can explain your attributes and it’s just words until you can set things in motion when you actually get hired.

I don’t have the experience in most fields that other applicants have obtained because they have been working for a much longer period of time than I have. I’m fairly new to the workforce. Not many employers will take a chance on a younger, less experienced employee.

I got lucky getting the job at the news office last year. I was referred by one of my teachers after we were talking and I expressed my interest in photography. I got the job and the rest is history. I will forever appreciate the opportunity I was given. I’ve enjoyed my employment here and I wouldn’t give up this last year for any amount of money in my paycheck.

I live under the philosophy of “I’d rather be broke and happy than rich and miserable.”

I would like to grow my photography interests. I know it requires perseverance and patience, but you also need to get hired to work in a field to gain experience.

Another complaint of mine is that I wish the employers would keep you updated with their choices regarding the application process. I do understand that I need to follow up on an interview to an extent. The employer is not going to chase me down. I would just like a little more communication on their part.
