Memories Gone By

News from Browerville's Past

25 Years Ago April 13, 1995 A 40-year-old man was shot three times and left for dead while walking his dog Tuesday night, less than half a block from the north Minneapolis home that his family moved into about a month ago. John Pogreba, of the 3600 block of Girard Avenue, was in critical condition at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale and the shooting may leave him paralyzed. Investigators had not determined a motive, but said it appeared that Pogreba did not provoke the shooting. No arrests have been made. He was shot once in the neck, once in the left knee and once in the right thigh. ********** On April 4, the Browerville Fire Department responded to a chimney fire at the Ed Retka residence located nine miles east of Browerville. A steel stove pipe built up with creosote and partial blockage of the chimney were the cause of the fire. There was no damage to the house. 75 Years Ago April 14, 1945 At the close of the Red Cross drive on March 31, and with all solicitors reporting to their respective chairmen the following Tuesday evening, it was disclosed the local quota had been exceeded by $9.46 for a total of $2109. Chairmen Ed Iten and Byron Monnie of the local war fund drive stated that the credit for raising this large amount goes to the solicitors that worked diligently to solicit funds for the drive. ********** Beginning on Wednesday of this week, the local bus service is back on regular schedule. Because of the road conditions the past month lighter buses were called into service on Highway 71 and the 3:14 afternoon bus going south was scheduled to arrive in Browerville at 7:47. This week however the 3:14 p.m. schedule is again effective.
