The filing period for election to city offices closed Monday afternoon. As of 2:30 p.m., Monday, the following had filed: Steve Wiersgalla, incumbent for mayor; and Diana Brehmer, candidate for mayor. Mark Oberg, incumbent; and Sandra Christensen, recently appointed; both filed for positions on the city council. Christensen was appointed to take the place of Jack Dressen who resigned.

The volleyball team is led by senior players: Johnelle Brown, Sarah Gonsior, Chelsey Konetzko, Kayla Rinde, Kim Salber, Heather Schultz and Merrianne Werder and they are off to a 4-0 start. The Tigers traveled to Bertha-Hewitt for the season opener. Offensively, the Tigers attack was directed by Jr. Setter Paulette Oven with 17 set assists and Sr. Setter Brown added 9 assists. On the receiving end of those assists was Megan Gereats with 8 kills, 3 ace tips and a block.

Todd County will be represented by a number of rural women at the 11th annual short course for farm women at the University Farm this week, September 13-15. Several hundred women from all over the states are expected to attend the sessions. Among the women who will attend the three-day meeting are: Mrs. Arnold Lawin, Burttrum; Mrs. Henry Robben, Staples; and Mrs. Ortwin Tesch of Browerville.

Replacement cattle stole the limelight in the week’s opening livestock trade as the nation’s major marketing centers listed the heaviest run since October 1949. With nearly 112,000 cattle at the 12 major markets, western grass cattle made up the bulk of the week’s opening supply at South Saint Paul. Stockers and feeders accounted for 35-40 percent of the supply.
