August 17, 1995

Gladys Hasser of Long Prairie was a runner-up in the Todd County senior king and queen competition. Joyce Thiel, 74, king, and Mabel Chipman, 90, queen, both of Staples, will represent Todd County at the state fair.

Thomas Dunn, writer, lives in a 120 year old farmhouse by Turtle Lake at Sylvan Shores. He has three non-fiction books published and a fourth coming out this winter. There is currently a play in rehearsal off-broadway in New York City (The Evidence). Thomas just returned from Virginia where his most recent full length play (Victor and the Virgin) was presented. He has also published 200 newspaper interviews, op/ed essays, etc.

Over 400 acres will be added to the 8800 acre network of wildlife refuges in Todd County thanks to the action taken by the Todd County Board of Commissioners on August 7. The commissioners agreed to allow the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to purchase over 100 acres from a landowner in Iona Township and over 300 acres in Turtle Creek Township.

Scott Erickson and Joe Steinhagen fired up a 1913 Nicholas and Shepherd 85 horsepower steam tractor at the Rose City Threshing and Heritage Festival this past weekend. Also, Laurence Adensan of Rose City plowed with his pair of Belgium horses.
