News From Browerville's Past


25 Years Ago

February 23, 1995

Urban Wrobel was announced the winner of his own fishing tournament on February 4 on Long Lake in Burtrum. Judges sorted through complaints of tournament fixing and despite the violation of starting to fish before the tournament officially began, the judges awarded the top prize to Urban. The judges were swayed by the fact that only two fish were caught, that it was his 80th birthday and that he was their father.

Sarah Rush and Amanda Cichon with their research project “Epidemic Defeated Smallpox,” placed second at Browerville and at district. Ramona Field with her research project “Dinosaurs,” placed third at the Browerville Science Fair and was grand champion at district. Matthew Schaefer with his experiment “Corrosion,” placed first at the Browerville Science Fair and at the district.


75 Years Ago

February 24, 1945

A certificate of award was this week granted to Leo Eldred of the Browerville High School as a member of the Star-Journey All State six-man football team.

Sgt. Ignatius Nalewaja of Browerville, engineer-gunner on the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress, has recently been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air medal. He won the decoration for “courage, coolness and skill,” and his outstanding performance of duty during a number of Eighth Air Force attacks on German war targets.
