News From Eagle Bend's Past

25 Years Ago

June 21, 1995

Dale Svaren, former high school principal at the newly consolidated Norman County East schools in Twin Valley and Gary, is the new superintendent of Eagle Bend and Clarissa. Svaren’s superintendency became official as of June 13. He was one of four finalists for the vacancy created by the resignation of Superintendent Russel Martinson.

Three area residents were killed in a two car accident on Sunday afternoon on a Traverse County road. John Herbert Johnson, 82, and his wife Eldora Johanna, 79, along with their passenger Sylvia Edna Blombeck, 78, were dead at the scene after they collided with a pickup. The accident occurred about four miles north of Wheaton and Traverse County 10 at an intersection. The driver of the pickup was Wayne Robert Schmidtke, 20, of Wheaton who was alone. He was airlifted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo where he was reported stable and in good condition.


50 Years Ago

June 18, 1970

Reverend Leo Hagmann will leave his position as pastor of the Clarissa United Methodist Church at the end of the month. Reverend and Mrs. Hagmann will have completed three years of their charge in Clarissa this summer. They also served Eagle Bend and Clotho.

Specialist Five Roger J. Rhodes, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Rhodes, Eagle Bend, recently received the Army Commendation Medal while serving with the 46th Engineer Battalion in Vietnam.
