Schuller gets a “big bang” lesson in neuroscience

by Karin L. Nauber

Ten-year-old Zoie Schuller, who will be a fifth grader at Bertha-Hewitt Elementary in the fall, recently had an unmistakably “big” experience.

She recently attended two online neuroscience classes called, “Neuroscience isn’t Necessarily Brain Science.”

These two classes were taught by Mayim Bialik, who apart from her long-time acting career (she played “Amy” on The Big Bang Theory television show among many other television shows and movies) is a scientist and an author.

According to Zoie’s mom, Ashley, “She was able to attend the lessons and during the lesson Mayim would ask neuroscience questions and the children could write back their answers. The students were also able to ask questions and some of the questions were picked throughout the lesson to get answered.”

Bialik’s profile contains a long list of accolades and programs that she has acted in.

Here is just a short list:

• American actress, scientist, and author.

From 1991 to 1995, she played the title character of the NBC sitcom Blossom.

Bialik later played neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory from 2010 to 2019.

Outside of her acting career, she holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

For her role as Fowler, Bialik has been nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and won the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016.

Zoie found out about the opportunity from her grandmother Meg Schuller who is a teacher at the Bertha-Hewitt School.

“She tagged us in a Facebook link and I signed Zoie up,” said Ashley.

There were no particular requirements to attend the lessons as it was open to anyone who signed up. It was suggested to be at least in fifth grade and up, but the lessons were open to all ages and grades.

There was no cost as the lessons were offered as a free live online class through Varsity Tutors. They offer many virtual classes some of which are free while some charge a fee.

Zoie has been extremely smart since a really young age. . . .
