What farmers and ranchers learned from the drought

The Sustainable Farming Association hosted the Crow Wing River Basin Forage Council’s winter meeting on January 20 at the Verndale Community Center.

Troy Salzer, with the University of Minnesota Extension, St. Louis County, explained what they learned about managing herds through the drought. Salzer has worked in the extension department for over 20 years finding ways to apply available technology and practical aspects to help farmers stay in business.

On his own family farm this year he noticed forage production was one-third of what it normally was. They have found ways to conserve forage.
