A Matter of Perspective

In my articles, I take a lot of time talking about health and wellness. It is somewhat of an obsession of mine. I feel that healthy eating is the best way to address disease. It is even more important than exercise, in my humble opinion.

You cannot out-exercise a poor diet. That’s the bottom line. The healthier you eat, the better your entire self will be.

It’s easy to say this, though, and not as easy to do what it takes to eat healthily.

Often people will come up with reasons why they don’t eat healthy options:

• It’s too expensive

• Healthy food doesn’t taste good

• It’s too much work

• I don’t have time to prepare healthy meals

The list goes on and on. But you do see that these are just excuses, right?

I use them, too. I am not immune to using excuses. And there are some ways that I even agree in my heart with some of the excuses I listed.

One thing I can’t do, however, is to agree with those excuses in my brain. Because with knowledge comes the fact that we cannot deny the truth.

Let’s look at #1, it’s too expensive.

Granted, in the short term, high-quality food, veggies, fruits, and the like do appear to cost more. But when you factor in all the disease-related costs associated with processed foods, well, isn’t a healthy salad with radishes and cucumbers and other healthy foods a lot cheaper?

Okay, so on to #2 which is one of my biggest complaints: healthy food doesn’t taste good.

It doesn’t take much to make healthy food taste good and it isn’t by adding fat, sugar, or salt either.

For breakfast most mornings I make oatmeal cereal which I prepare the night before. It combines steel-cut oats, flax seeds, chia seeds, and almond milk. I set that in the refrigerator overnight.

By itself, this combination would not be very tasty. It would be downright bland and tasteless.

But in the morning is when the magic happens!

I add a small number of almonds, cashews, and walnuts mixed with dried cranberries and raisins. Then to top it off, I add frozen blueberries.

All I can say is this is MARVELOUS! It is filling, nutritional, and very flavorful. The best part is you can add whatever fruit you want. I choose blueberries because they are one of the healthiest fruits out there and they taste so good! I add them frozen because then it makes the whole thing like a frozen dessert!

There is no cooking involved. You dirty three dishes: the one you make the food in, the spoon you eat it with, and the measuring cup. That makes cleanup easy!

Those last items make the last two excuses—#3 and #4—moot points, as well.

We can make excuses or we can make changes.

Which one do you choose to do today?
