Seven hundred eighty-seven people cast their votes in the special election to either approve or deny a bond issue that would allow the Bertha school district to improve and update the current school building and add facilities including a new gym, locker rooms and family center. The issue passed with 506 people voting “yes” and 280 voting “no” (one ballot was defective).

The Bertha-Hewitt softball team has gotten off to a rough start. They have one win which was against Osakis and six losses. The Bears have a very young team with no seniors. The varsity players include juniors Crystal Tindal, Sarah Sellnow, Alexis Johnson and Tracy Schultz.

The Bertha Music Department placed high in the music contest held at Glenwood. Top honors were gained in six events competing against other schools regardless of size. High honors were received by the saxophone quartet, clarinet solo by Charles Bottemiller, mixed chorus girls triple trip, boys glee club, trombone solo by Bill Bottemiller, coronet solo by Delmar Kotz, vocal solo by Phyllis Bluhm, and girls glee club.

The Girl Scouts met Tuesday evening at the schoolhouse. The first half hour consisted of games, the business included the order of Girl Scout cookies and camp information. Sandra Tangen was elected chairman for the next meeting.
